What is Botox®?

Botox® is the trade name for Botulinum Toxin, a neurotoxin in the form of a purified protein. The mechanism of action for Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) is really quite simple; it is injected into facial muscles but really doesn’t affect the muscle at all. Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) works by blocking the transmitters between the motor nerves that innervate the muscle. The areas typically treated with Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) for wrinkles are the forehead, between the eyes (glabellar region), around the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet) and around the lips (smokers lines or gummy smile). There is no loss of sensory feeling in the muscles. Once the motor nerve endings are interrupted, the muscle cannot contract, causing wrinkles in the skin to smooth. The effects of Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) last approximately three to four months, at which time the patient will require retreatment.

What is Dysport®?

Dysport® is a Botulinum Toxin product developed in the United Kingdom during the early 1990’s. Originally created to treat neurological and ophthalmic conditions, Dysport® is now known to treat a variety of conditions, including moderate to severe frown lines. During the procedure, a small amount of Dysport® is injected directly into the facial muscles that correspond with wrinkles and lines. No local anesthetic is required and patients can expect treatment to take 10-20 minutes. The esthetic results of Dysport® injections generally last 12 to 16 weeks. Fortunately, due to muscles “unlearning” the habit of frowning and/or squinting, the need for injections may become less frequent.

    Pre-Treatment and Comfort
Clients should steer clear of harsh skincare products such as exfoliants, acids, and retinoids for at least a week pre-treatment. These sensitize the skin and can lead to more irritation after the procedure.
The Cosmelan® treatment is well-tolerated by most people and requires no anesthesia. That said, a topical numbing cream can be applied upon request if your skin is particularly sensitive.

What to Expect During and After Cosmelan®?

Cosmelan® treatments are customized based on your skin’s needs and long-term goals. That said, our providers keep some steps standard for consistency, effectiveness, and safety. Here’s what you can expect:

    • Consultation

We’ll discuss your goals and come up with a personalized treatment plan. Our providers will take into account your skin sensitivities and concerns, along with your history with hyperpigmentation.

    • Area Prepping

Our providers will cleanse the skin using gentle products to ensure there’s no dirt or lingering makeup left. This way, there won’t be a barrier between the skin and the product.

    • Mask Application

We will apply the mask evenly on the target area, depending on your needs. The solution will stay there for a few minutes until it dries sufficiently, after which you can go home. The solution remains on your skin for the next eight to 12 hours, after which you can remove it with a gentle facial cleanser and lukewarm water.

    • Home Treatment Instructions

You’ll be given the instructions on how to properly apply the Cosmelan® 2 cream and other products. This lets you reach optimal results without delay, with your skin gradually brightening with every application.

    • Recovery

Expect some mild redness over the next five to seven days, along with some dryness and a slight warming sensation. These effects are a sign that the mask is doing its job and has begun removing the damaged layers of the skin. Use a gentle moisturizer and avoid exfoliating products for the time being. Broad-spectrum sunblock is not just recommended, but essential.

    • Results

The timeline for the results depends on your level of pigmentation. Most clients notice significant improvement after two to three weeks, but the skin quality keeps improving over the next few months. Use the Cosmelan® 2 cream every day for best results.
